ESL Podcast 筆記: English Cafe #84

Topic 1:
Homelessness, 無家可歸.(也就是一般說的遊民): People who do not have a permanent home, a place they can go. They may be living on the street, sleeping in the park, maybe sleeping in the car, may be staying in the shelter.

Homeless shelters are temporary residences for people who don’t have a home to live.

One study found there are about 750,000 people in the U.S. who do not have a permanent place to live, who sleep in their car, in the park or some other place.

There are many reasons why there are so many homeless people in the U.S.:
1. People don’t have money:
In Hawaii, there is a problem now. The prices of houses have gone up so high. People live there don’t have the money to pay for or rent an apartment. So they have to sleep on the beach, in the tent, or somewhere else.
2. People who have substance abuse problems:
Substance abuse 是指藥物drugs/酒精alcohol濫用, 算是好聽的講法, 看報紙會常看到. Drug雖然是藥物的意思, 但是比較負面的字眼. 一般都是指毒品;
abuse means not to use it correctly. 也就是濫用的意思;
3. People who have some sort of mental problem:
Mental illness: psychological problem(精神疾病)
Mental: how to think, how to behavior
(Many of the government programs, institutions to help mentally ill have been closed).

還試著provide training people to help people, so they can get a job.

Topic 2:
Pre-nup; Post-nup:

Prenup agreement: 婚前協議: an agreement between people who are going to get married.
Postnup agreement: 婚後協議: to people who are married already.

主講人說這是一個strange idea(怪異的想法), 因為you are saying that you love this person, but maybe in the future, you will divorce them. You want to protect the money. I love you! But, in case I stop loving you, don’t take my money.
注意stop+ to跟stop+ Ving的差別:

通常這個協議是財產分配(how are you going to divide the properties you own between you and your husband/wife). 但也會包括Spousal support(贍養費), 如果有小孩還會有協議Child support(子女養育費).
Spouse:

The marriage is on the rocks.

Answer questions:
1. Smith the name, oil the game.
The person’s name is Smith. Oil/petroleum is this person’s business.

(To have water come out of your eyes and go down your face. That water we call tears. The singular is tears.)

To shed a tear/ to shed tears.
To cry= to weep= to shed tears

Real men don’t cry!
The family wept. (weep

3. I want to see you smile.
I want to see a smile on your face.
Want to see someone(do something)

ESL Podcast 筆記: 266 - Making a Move on Someone

What was going on with you and Tiego today?

Make a move on someone: show/express your romantic interest in someone(interest 對某事的介系詞要用in; Surprise 對某事的介系詞要用at, e.g.: Gloria is surprised at A.J.’s comment.)
Hit on someone= have a crush on someone(口語) 煞到某人, 跟make a move on someone不一樣的是make a move on someone是實際上(physically)有行動了, 但是hit on/ have a crush on只是”精神上(mentally)”煞到而已
e.g.:
- If you hit on a woman who is not interested in you, you might get hit.

Cozy (adj.) = to be very comfortable舒服的; very close to someone else跟某人親近
e.g.:
-He is cozy sitting in the living room drinking coffee.
這個句子: He is cozy. I was upset messing up my presentation in my morning meeting.

Mess up: 搞雜, make a mistake(這常用, 我把XX搞雜了)
Mess= something is not clean/dis-order
e.g.:
- My room is always a mess

Reassure (v.) = to comfort= to make someone feel better/less worried/ less scared about something 使放心
e.g.:
- A.J. was trying to reassure her about the presentation.
- I was very worried about missing my airplane, but my wife reassured me that we would make it to the airport on time.

Ridiculous= silly= absurd 可笑的
e.g.:
- Don’t be ridiculous/ silly.
- His idea is absurd.

Sexual harassment:
When you do something or say something, usually at work, that is considered inappropriate; something usually related to having a romantic or sexual interest in another person, but you do something that is against the rules; do something or say something that makes the person feel uncomfortable.
e.g.:
- I had to file a sexual harassment complaint against him before he stopped.

e.g.:
- Do you need to file a federal tax return?
- Atmel plans to file its annual report to the SEC in April.

You are comparing apples to oranges. Even though they are different, you are trying to say that they are the same.

Observant (adj.) = be aware of what is happening around you/ to be paying attention/ notice things around you.
e.g.:
- You are not the most observant person.

Mark my words. = listen carefully to what I’m saying and remember this. 通常會這樣說都是因為making prediction that something will become true in the future. (因為A.J. Tiego is really interested in Gloria!!! )

Flattered= to be happy or pleased to know that another person thinks you are good/pretty/smart/talented
e.g.:
- If he is interested, I’m flattered.

To have all the luck = to be very lucky/ fortunate 很好運
e.g.:
- That’s what all women say, some guys have all the luck.

Add insult to injury= to compound a problem (or set of problems) with further a problem or problems. Tiego has a crush on Gloria, Gloria也覺得他不錯.

What can I say? (I have nothing to do with.)

ESLPod (English as a Second Language Podcast).

Listen,
